To escape her intrusive admirers, Countess Mariza flees to her country estate in Hungary and into an engagement with the fictional Count Zsupán. When the fictitious marriage candidate suddenly appears very real and wants to cheerfully abduct his beloved to Varasdin, the cheerfully emotional chaos takes its course. An impoverished, mysterious estate manager, also in love with the Countess, then finally throws the quiet Hungarian country life into disarray. Kálmán's fabulous music accompanies this hilarious and deeply touching plot, a true fireworks display of fast Csárdás, unforgettable evergreens, and lively hits – in short, a grand operetta classic in red, white, and green.
