The grand opening features two central works by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms – two composers who had a special connection to the Salzkammergut region. Schubert found inspiration and relaxation during his stays in the area, and Brahms spent many summers in Bad Ischl, where he composed some of his most important works. Their music reflects the landscape’s beauty and the intellectual atmosphere that continue to make the Salzkammergut a place of extraordinary cultural significance today. The program centers on Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, selected orchestrated songs, Gabriel Fauré’s moving Requiem, and Brahms’ poignant Schicksalslied. These works explore existential questions of transience, comfort, and hope, combining Romantic emotional expression with a compelling musical tension. For the artistic realization, the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks assemble an ensemble of international standing: under the baton of star conductor Ivor Bolton, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Munich Bach Choir (arranged by Howard Arman), and two internationally acclaimed soloists – American soprano Erika Baikoff (Bavarian State Opera Munich) and Austrian baritone Rafael Fingerlos – will perform. Together, they present an evening of exceptional musical quality and emotional intensity – a festive event that underscores the ambitions of the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks Gmunden and marks the beginning of a new, high-caliber concert series.
