Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh

Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh

What's it about?

"When the work laughs / the poet cries / and vice versa" (Thomas Bernhard) Thomas Bernhard's comedy, first performed in 1982, centers on the writer Moritz Meister, who so eagerly presents himself as a German poet prince. It was once received quite critically by German feuilletonists but favorably by the audience. Hellmuth Karasek ironically noted in "Der Spiegel" that "some critics grumpily remarked that the audience laughed." Indeed, "Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh" is a light-hearted, subtle comedy full of allusions to vain poet cults and a senselessly rotating cultural industry: profound, comedic - and self-ironic at the same time.
