What's it about?

"For two years I wrote court reports. An invaluable chapter. I believe the roots lie there." (Thomas Bernhard) The young twenty-year-old Thomas Bernhard began as a journalist in 1951/52. He wrote over 250 newspaper articles for Salzburg newspapers and the Viennese "Furche" until 1954. Many of his texts read like small, pointed theater scenes; political or socio-critical engagement speaks from many everyday reports. Decades later, Thomas Bernhard confessed: "For two years I wrote court reports. These later became present to me again when writing prose. An invaluable chapter. I believe the roots lie there." - The roots of his plays and novels. Hermann Beil, closely associated with the Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden for over a decade, also has a decades-long collaboration with Thomas Bernhard personally. He was responsible for the dramaturgy of numerous premieres at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Salzburg Festival, and the Burgtheater Vienna. As part of the Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden, he regularly reads at the Bernhaus-Haus in Ohlsdorf, and for several years he has been setting up the staged Bernhard evenings, which have developed into crowd-pullers at the Stadttheater Gmunden.
