As part of Austria Reads Week, we are pleased to welcome young author Anna Maschik on October 22, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Parish Center St. Michael in Schwanenstadt. The novel "Wenn du es heimlich machen willst, musst du die Schafe töten" begins with a disturbing, almost archaic image – a secretly slaughtered sheep – and leads directly into the story of a family over several generations. There is the great-grandmother, who stirs blood for sausages, a great-uncle who sleeps for fifteen years, and a grandmother who steals bricks from the roof at night. Between sparse everyday life, war experiences, and new beginnings, a complex family portrait emerges that extends into the present. At the center is Alma, who tries to piece together these fragments of history – and in doing so, realizes that she herself is part of this large fabric. In dense, linguistically powerful passages, Anna Maschik unfolds a literary cosmos where reality and quietly surreal elements intertwine. A story about origins, influence, and the question of whether we can escape our fate.
