Information about the project "Water for Rui Barbosa" The project started with money from an expiring home savings contract of Josef Linsmaier's parents – about €3,500 – in 1991. With this money, the renovation of the 1st Agricultural School in Rui Barbosa was completed. There are now 8 such schools. Linsmaier's parents realized during their first visit in 1994 that one of the biggest problems in this semi-arid area is the supply of drinking water. With financial support from the Wels association, 600 drinking water cisterns were built for small farming families – this successful model was later adopted by the state of Bahia, and another 17,000 cisterns were built in the region. For years, the focus has been on educational programs for children and adolescents. For example, in 2005, a children's home was built in Itaberaba, the largest city in the diocese, for 50 children. Since then, the children are cared for after school; the snacks for the children and the salaries...
