What's it about?

Workshop at the Lauriacum Museum The old art of smudging in the rhythm of the seasons When it comes to customs and smudging, many immediately think of the mysterious Rauhnächte (winter nights) in winter. But smudging is much more than a Christmas tradition. It is an ancient knowledge that can accompany us throughout the year. Already in antiquity, the purifying and clarifying power of herbs and resins was used to celebrate transitions, accompany rituals, or energetically cleanse spaces. Whether at the summer solstice, during the harvest season in autumn, or at spring awakening – each season offers its own treasures. While warming resins dominate in winter, it is often fragrant flowers and cleansing herbs like sage or mugwort that provide clarity and fresh energy in summer. Today, smudging is considered a valuable ritual of pausing in a hectic world. It helps to perceive the rhythm of nature more consciously and to integrate the beneficial effects of native plants into modern everyday life. Two experts will explain how to select the right herbs for each season and what effects they have on our well-being during a special afternoon on this topic. Mag. Iris Ott and certified herbal educator Christine Baumgartner will provide a well-founded and practical introduction to the world of smudging. They will connect ancient knowledge with modern applications. In addition to herbal knowledge, participants will enjoy a joint visit to the Lauriacum Museum, which emphasizes the historical dimension of this tradition in the region. An ideal opportunity to rediscover old knowledge and gather inspiration for your own home pharmacy. Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lauriacum Museum, Hauptplatz 19, 4470 Enns.
