The archaeological finds from the area of the Roman legionary camp Lauriacum near Enns and its surroundings prompted a group of interested individuals in 1892 to establish a museum association for Enns and its vicinity. The owner of Ennsegg Castle provided a room in the manor house of the castle for the museum. In 1898, its own collection was combined with the city history collection of the Old Town Hall and the Fürstenberg private collection. In the course of this, the association received permission to display its collection in the old council hall. This laid the foundation for the later Museum Lauriacum. After a prolonged temporary accommodation due to bombardments and the great lack of space in the post-war period, a new arrangement of the exhibits in the museum could only take place again in 1964 and 1967. One of Austria's most significant Roman-era exhibition collections presents the diversity of Roman culture in the most important military base on the Danube Limes in the province of Noricum. The monumental building inscription of the legionary camp Lauriacum, the military equipment, the grave monuments, the numerous testimonies of Roman daily life, the unique ceiling fresco, and a late antique fabric fragment are particularly noteworthy among the many exhibits. Aspects of the medieval and modern city history of Enns are conveyed by, among other things, old views, historical weapons, the council hall with its magnificent paintings, and the room with sacred art objects. In 1988, the Museum Lauriacum received the Austrian Museum Prize and holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality. In view of the anniversary "800 Years of Enns City Charter," extensive renovation work has been carried out since autumn 2011.
