A patriotic special edition for the National Day: being homeland, art in German, and Austria, homeland in art — Austria as an art country, homeland of art — — (Ernst Jandl, from "Die Humanisten") Mütter brings Jandl's texts to their original purpose — to be passionately performed. (...) Mütter embodies the language itself, slipping into the role of the voice speaking to us, taking on the perspective of a specific character line by line. This makes the reading a 'play' in which not a single tongue-twister wordplay stumbles. Mütter is not only confident in text and speech but also skillfully operates within the realm where playful wit does not turn into trivial comedy. The performance alternates with avant-garde trumpet sounds, with the brass instrument mocking and chirping. The quick switch between text and music highlights the musicality of the language, with one becoming the other until they are indistinguishable. You have never heard Jandl like this — but this is exactly how you should always hear him! Lukas Meschik It is simply this: this year at Pentecost, Bertl Mütter performed Jandl for the first time in Steyr at the Dunklhof Literature Days. It received such enthusiastic approval that some want to experience Jandl again, they have announced; others, who were not there, wish for a second chance. They shall have it, and this time, to the delight of all patriots, with a similar focus. But which day would be better suited for this than the Day of the Flag?
