SUONNO D’AJERE - The Glamorous Comeback of Canzone Classica Napoletana
What's it about?
The name of the trio from Naples, founded in 2016, means roughly “The Dream of Yesterday” and refers to the song of the same name on Pino Daniele’s debut album “Terra Mia” (1977). The three young musicians have dedicated themselves entirely to the research and contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Neapolitan song. The line-up is reminiscent of the “Posteggia” tradition, particularly popular in the 19th century in Naples, street and tavern music that appealed to the common people as much as to the rulers. However, the trio's musical approach is significantly more refined. Suonno d’Ajere want to free the old songs from commercialism and kitsch and restore their dignity and power, and they have certainly succeeded: In Italy, their stylistically rigorous and refined combination of folk and art music, always typical of Naples, has already earned them an appearance at the Venice Biennale for the film music to the documentary “La Chimera” as well as first prize at the “SanremoCantaNapoli” Festival. The debut album “Suspiro” was released worldwide in 2021 and promptly nominated for the German Record Critics' Award. Since then, Suonno d’Ajere have been regular guests at showcase events and festivals around the globe and have established themselves as the new ambassadors of Neapolitan song abroad. The new album “Nun v’annamurate” (“Don’t fall in love”) will be released in spring 2024 and is entirely dedicated to the theme of love in all its facets. “The Neapolitan song is not a museum relic, a mummy without oxygen. Its scores are not parchment scrolls to be sanctified, but a legacy that wants to be celebrated.” Suonno d’Ajere Line-up Gian Marco Libeccio – classical guitar Irene Scarpato – vocals Marcello Gentile Smigliante – mandolin, mandoloncello IRENE SCARPATO Irene Scarpato studied jazz as well as modern and opera singing at the Naples Conservatory of Music and has already received numerous music and poetry awards in her homeland. Her voice can also be found on soundtracks, including the film “La Chimera” shown at the Biennale di Venezia in 2017 and in “Veleno” (Diego Olivares). In 2018 and 2019, she was a member of the ensemble of theater director Luciano Melchionna. MARCELLO SMIGLIANTE GENTILE Marcello Smigliante Gentile has played mandolin since he was ten years old and completed his music studies at the Conservatory in Naples with distinction. Since 2012, he has played in various ensembles, including the Melis Mandolin Quartet, with whom he performs at national and international concerts and festivals. GIAN MARCO LIBECCIO Gian Marco Libeccio has played guitar since childhood and discovered classical guitar and classical Neapolitan songs early on. He completed his jazz music studies at the Naples Conservatory of Music with distinction.
