Malarina: Asphalt
What's it about?
Construction sites pass, progress remains. Malarina has turned away from the ÖVP (Austrian People's Party) and is again searching for the perfect match. But both politically and personally, she seems to have exhausted her pool. Time for a change of location. In her Serbian hometown Pička Materina, the last street has now been paved. Even a highway connection is being considered. Progress has arrived – and with it, tourists. When Malarina is asked to take over the management of a hotel, she sees her chance. For the first time, Austria and Serbia seem to want the same thing from her: remigration. And it is important to her to leave voluntarily. As long as it is still voluntary. But what awaits the children and grandchildren of guest workers where their families have been building houses for return for decades? Can Malarina integrate into her homeland? Text: Marina Lacković Director: Steffo Sourial Costume: Goran Bugarić Awards: 2024 German Small Arts Prize (Support Award of the City of Mainz), 2024 Minden Stickleback, 2023 Salzburg Stier, 2022 Austrian Cabaret Prize (Support Award) About Malarina: Malarina was born in Picka Materina without a highway connection, Serbia. Her parents came to Austria as guest workers; their stay was supposed to be temporary until the Serbian economy recovered. When her parents finally gave up this hope, they brought their children to be raised in beautiful Innsbruck. In 2011, Malarina finally fled to the capital of misanthropy, Vienna, to avoid further disappointment of Tyrolean expectations regarding friendliness. With her debut "Serben sterben langsam" (Serbs Die Slowly), Malarina tried to contribute to understanding between the peoples through cabaret, among the Schwabos, Tschuschen, and elite Tschuschen. She was awarded a few prizes for this. "Trophäenraub" (Trophy Theft) is Malarina's second cabaret program.
