Attwenger: wos

What's it about?

I don't know what it is, but it is something. For 36 years, a ghost has been haunting the music scene - the ghost of slang punk. It goes by the name Attwenger, cannot be caught, and regularly appears in public in its current form. What is Attwenger coming up with this time? With WOS, their tenth studio album. After MOST, PFLUG, LUFT, SONG, SUN, DOG, FLUX, SPOT, DRUM. wos is. is wos. wos is los jetzt. The electrified accordion draws air from its surroundings, squeezes it, and blows it back into the surroundings through metallic reeds that vibrate and produce sounds. The beats of the drums and the sequencer, as stably restless pulses from different sound sources, provide the rhythm. All interwoven with fraying words, invented, experienced, carefully chosen texts that play with language, which forms the nutrient for the voice of the subconscious and conscious. Stirred up by the music, the stories groove along. Whatever it is, it is always something. Many no longer know how and what. The high-pitched mood creates tensions. They are already going at each other. But: I don't even want to ride the horses that have been saddled. Between the lines, there are possibilities that can be used for interesting exits. But far too much is believed, far too much is needed. Yet we could easily get by with less. The distribution of wealth, the distribution of interests, the distribution of music, what will become of it? It won't stay that way, or rather, it can't stay that way anyway. When will society relax? How will it achieve equality? The big wind drives us forward, yet we wanted to make a move ourselves. What is it triggered by, from within, from without? You are King, I am Kong, who is right, who is wrong. And even if everyone is glued to their phones and even if some find a hair in the soup: we move on with energetic positions on shaky ground. We don't have to do what they say we have to. is wos. hod wos. kau wos. wird wos. Markus Binder Attwenger hide behind their very own tradition-alienation a pop-cultural universe that ranges from rock'n'roll and polka to trip-hop and techno. From two-minute song miniatures to twenty-minute hypno-loops, everything is in it. You have to see them live to understand the full range of their musical magic and feel their special groove. A life without Attwenger is possible, but not desirable. Because the stars in this country ran out of ideas, they traveled to Africa and Latin America to make music with the natives. In the case of Attwenger, it's different. Here, the wild ones make music themselves. Instead of world music, there is a unique music world here. Attwenger combine elements of traditional music with punk rock, trap, hip-hop, techno, dub, and rockabilly. Their minimalist concept has long had little to do with folklore; the orientation of their music is rather internationalist, the lyrics groovy, crazy, critical of mentality, or as the Süddeutsche Zeitung put it: High-quality madness in dialect. In the same newspaper, Attwenger were described as virtuoso ruffians who make brilliant music that makes your ass shake. Hans-Peter Falkner (electric button accordion, vocals) and Markus Binder (drums, electro beats, jaw harp, vocals) founded their duo in the early nineties and never aimed to conquer the mainstream, but rather to constantly develop their special mixture of the most diverse ingredients. Without Attwenger it would be tighter, but they will stay even longer.
