The Catholic Church and Nazi Euthanasia

Wednesday 4 November · 19:00Zeitgeschichte-Museum Ebensee · oberoesterreich

What's it about?

Already before 1938, both the Church and believers faced the central ideologies of eugenics and racial hygiene in the Nazi program. These were hardly compatible with Catholic doctrines and beliefs. Starting in 1939/40, the Nazi regime began the physical extermination of people with disabilities and mental illnesses, posing existential questions for church circles. The lecture traces, through various examples, how the Church and laypeople behaved in the face of the murder campaigns and sometimes also attempted to resist. Speaker: Mag. Florian Schwanninger (Learning and Memorial Site Schloss Hartheim). Start: 7 PM at ZME.
