What's it about?

By Arthur Schnitzler. Vienna around 1900: The young Lieutenant Gustl looks around the ranks at a concert, considering which young women he might later approach. When the concert finally ends, Gustl pushes his way into the cloakroom and snaps at a master baker, who then calls him a silly boy. Although no one else noticed the incident, Gustl believes he has forever lost his honor and must now commit suicide, as the code of honor leaves him no other choice. In the quiet of the Prater at night, his self-pity turns into self-disgust, and he begins to question his way of life. However, at dawn, he immediately reverts to his old self, the grumpy man who blames everyone else. Still, he must now act like a real man, pay his gambling debts, burn his letters, and shoot himself at exactly seven o'clock. But then, everything turns out differently than expected.
