"Armament kills - even without war!" This sentence is as old as the peace movement itself. Horrendous military spending ruins the welfare state. Now, hard-won social achievements are blowing up in our faces. Benefits are cut for the poor, workers pay even higher contributions and are threatened by unemployment. Social peace, internal cohesion is in danger. Disillusionment with the state and politics endangers democracy. Peace among peoples begins with social peace in one's own country.Paul Schobel is a priest in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and was one of the first industrial chaplains. Previously, as a chaplain for the "Christian Workers' Youth", he was also responsible for advising conscientious objectors and thus became a peace activist himself.
