Marterl Hike on the Occasion of the 1st Lower Austrian Small and Field Monument Day

What's it about?

A warm invitation to the Marterl (wayside shrine) hike August 9, 2026 Meeting point: 2 PM at the Howiger-Marterl below the village center of St. Martin Together we will make our way towards the Rörndlwies leisure facility Currently, over 75 small monuments in our community are documented on www.marterl.at. Often these gems are only known from passing by – this afternoon we want to consciously focus on some of them, make them tangible on site, and bring their stories to life. In view of the upcoming Feast of the Assumption on August 15, we also want to use the hike to collect meadow herbs at our Marterl and hear interesting facts about the traditional significance of herbs around the Assumption. All hikers, whether “big or small,” are invited to tie their own herb bouquet and take it home afterwards (ribbons will be provided). We will end the afternoon together at the Badeoase St. Martin. The return journey is individual (one way approx. 2 km). We look forward to your coming! With the 1st Lower Austrian Small and Field Monument Day, a province-wide action day will be created from 2026 onwards, which will make these cultural treasures visible, highlight regional initiatives, and actively invite all Lower Austrians to engage with their cultural heritage. Small and field monuments characterize the cultural appearance of Lower Austria in a special way. Wayside crosses, Marterl, shrines, chapels, memorial stones, boundary stones, or religious small monuments tell of regional history, popular piety, historical events, craftsmanship, and local traditions. They are identity-forming testimonies of everyday culture and form an essential element of the Lower Austrian cultural landscape.
