About the book: In 1946, the Soviet occupation force arrested Lower Austrian provincial parliament member Ferdinand Riefler. His "crime": He had not prevented complaints and criticisms about rapes and looting by Soviet soldiers from being voiced at a political meeting in Weinviertel. A military tribunal sentenced him to four years of forced labor for "anti-Soviet propaganda." Even before Riefler, the Soviets had arrested Amstetten provincial parliament member Franz Gruber and his daughter. They were sentenced to 10 and 6 years of forced labor, respectively, although at the time it was not clear what the occupation force accused the two of. Riefler and Gruber met several times in Soviet prisons; political opponents became friends. Franz Gruber died in custody; his daughter only returned to Austria in 1960 – as Helene Bondarewa with three children. Ferdinand Riefler had left the Soviet Union "as early as" 1952, after surviving four years in various prisons and labor camps and then enduring two more years of exile as an invalid in the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Upon his return, he wrote down his experiences. The result was an exciting and well-observed report, which Riefler published in 1956 – after the Soviets withdrew from Austria. The new edition has been supplemented with background information on the USSR at the time. The authors: Christoph H. Benedikter studied history, ethnology, and economics. After completing his history studies, he worked as a researcher at a research institute, as well as an exhibition designer and cultural manager. Ferdinand Riefler (1897 – 1975) was, among other things, a trade unionist, journalist, and editor-in-chief of three weekly magazines. As an opponent of National Socialism, he was severely mistreated in Gestapo custody in 1938 and banned from his profession.
