What's it about?

The magazine for building, architecture, and design invites all culture enthusiasts on Saturday, October 10th, to free guided tours through the former Roman trading city and important customs station on the Danube, whose name refers to the collection of tolls ('Maut'). Built on the foundations of the Roman fortress Favianis, one of the most significant military camps on the Noric Danube Limes, Mautern has preserved the layout of its ancient past to this day. The rectangular structure of the former fortress is still clearly visible in the historic city center and forms the framework for an exceptionally well-preserved urban ensemble that combines architecture from various eras. The ensemble walk leads to Roman and medieval fortifications, which have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes' since 2021. The program also includes medieval sacred buildings and insights into selected historic townhouses. Highlights include a visit to Nikolaihof, Austria's oldest winery with a nearly 2,000-year-old wine tradition, as well as exclusive special tours of buildings normally not open to the public. This includes, among others, the late antique fan tower – an impressive testament to Roman military architecture. The meeting point for the ensemble walks is in the courtyard of the Mautern town hall. Address: Rathausplatz 1, 3512 Mautern an der Donau. Duration of the ensemble walks: approximately 1.5 hours. Especially worth seeing: Take the unique opportunity to experience live laser scans and the presentation of photogrammetric recordings of the fan tower and the Margaret Chapel as remaining parts of the late Roman fortifications. Public transport: e.g., train to Krems, then bus to Mautern. By car: Until Saturday noon, there is a short-term parking zone in the town area, public parking at the cemetery and sports field.
