In memory of the past, for peace: On the 120th birthday of the Klosterneuburg poet Erika Mitterer, the Erika-Mitterer-Gesellschaft invites to a high-profile literary and musical evening in the Augustinussaal of the monastery on November 30. With readings, music, and a world premiere, the event sends a message for peace, reconciliation, and dialogue between generations. She did not remain silent, even though she was tried to be silenced: Erika Mitterer (1906–2001) is one of the significant voices of Austrian literature, though still unjustly less known to the general public. The author of the historical novel 'Der Fürst der Welt' survived the Nazi era with her family as an 'inner emigrant' in her hometown Kritzendorf. Despite isolation and wartime experiences, she dedicated her life to humanity, understanding, and reconciliation through her literary work. Her message is more relevant than ever in light of global wars and societal divisions. The Erika-Mitterer-Gesellschaft aims to bring her work back into public awareness and create an evening that connects history with the challenges of our present. Literature, music, and a world premiere. On Monday, November 30, the Augustinussaal of the Klosterneuburg monastery will host a special encounter of literature and music. The event is open to the general public as well as to cultural professionals and representatives from politics, education, and religion. The celebration begins at 3:00 PM with an exhibition and an open 'Come together'. At 5:00 PM, Heidelberg literary scholar Prof. Ralf Czapla will shed light on the life and work of the poet in his lecture 'The Path of Erika Mitterer'. The literary and musical festive evening starts at 7:00 PM. Austrian actor Martin Ploderer will read texts from Mitterer's time of inner emigration and from the post-war years of hardship, including 'Die Wandermaler', with contemporary musical settings of her poetry. The highlight will be the world premiere of the newly set cycle '12 Gedichte' (1933–1945). The vocal duo Fritz and Elisabeth Horak will perform the works together with Thomas Holmes at the piano. The premiere aims to re-experience the historical texts in their artistic and human significance. A message for the next generation: The event is intentionally not a traditional memorial but a cross-generational dialogue. Young people and older generations are encouraged to engage in conversation and draw inspiration from history for the present. To allow young people to learn about Mitterer's thoughts on peace and reconciliation, admission to the entire event is free for them. An invitation to encounter and hope: The Erika-Mitterer-Gesellschaft invites everyone interested to rediscover the work of an extraordinary Austrian author. Especially in times of increasing conflicts and societal polarization, the evening aims to create space for meeting, reflection, and hope. Participation also signifies a commitment to peace, humanity, and respectful coexistence. Tickets cost €25, or €20 for members of literary societies; youth have free entry. Reservations, information, and registration at office@erika-mitterer.org.
