What's it about?

The autumn exhibition at Galerie Gugging presents artistic positions from Gugging, Art Brut, and contemporary art that engage with femininity and identity in various ways. Through the dialogue of the works, diverse perspectives on womanhood and its representation in art are opened up. The exhibition features works by Ida Buchmann, Verena Bretschneider, Misleidys Castillo Pedroso, Margot, Christa Wiener, and many other artists. Additionally, works by Gugging artist Laila Bachtiar and rarities from Gugging's early days, from Emma Brosch to Karoline Rosskopf, are on display. Works by the Werd:Art artists Patricia Musch, Iris Ewald, Elisabeth Mraz, and Suzanne Dixon broaden the view on contemporary positions outside traditional art institutions. With the autumn exhibition on women, curated by Timna Tichy, Galerie Gugging dedicates itself to a theme that has accompanied artists for centuries and remains highly relevant today: the depiction of femininity. The starting point of the exhibition is the observation that women artists have historically been less visible in art history—and for a long time also in Gugging—and often only gained recognition late. on women builds on this historical development without making it the sole focus. Instead, it directs attention to different artistic approaches and shows how diverse ideas of femininity can be interpreted today—between personal experience, societal roles, and individual visual language. Curator Timna Tichy states: "In this exhibition, I want to focus on women and their engagement with femininity. Positions from Gugging, Art Brut, and contemporary art come into dialogue on the topics of femininity and women. The works challenge stereotypes, show the aftermath and effects of role models, and negotiate gender identities." Different positions—shared perspectives The exhibition brings together female artists of different generations, origins, and artistic styles, whose works open up diverse approaches to the theme of femininity. Central to on women are works by Gugging artist Laila Bachtiar, whose dense, detailed paper drawings portray women from her personal environment and offer intimate insights into interpersonal relationships. Works by Lia Lydia Silvia, who also works at atelier gugging like Bachtiar, are part of the exhibition as well. She approaches the theme of femininity abstractly, translating inner feelings into an independent visual language. Her works were recently exhibited for the first time at museum gugging during the anniversary exhibition. The autumn exhibition at Galerie Gugging also features Swiss Art Brut artist Ida Buchmann, one of the most significant female figures in international Art Brut. Her distinctive figures combine image and text in her own unmistakable way and explore roles, family, and everyday observations. Buchmann’s works were created with acrylic paint, Edding, oil chalk, and ink at an impressive speed. Language also plays a central role in the delicate works of Hungarian artist Maria Magdolna Balassa, whose softly colored drawings with colored pencils are often accompanied by very personal poems and texts. Cuban artist Misleidys Castillo Pedroso creates powerful female figures in vibrant gouache works that are situated between mythology, motherhood, and the present. Her luminous colors and confident imagery contrast with the imposing, large-scale assemblages of German artist Verena Bretschneider, who transforms everyday objects into new sculptural narratives.
