Tonkünstler - Strawinski/Mossolow/Dukas
What's it about?
A evening centered around fairy tales, myth, and pure sound magic, showcasing the orchestra in all its colors. Between enchantment, seduction, and eruptive energy, a program full of imagination and sensual intensity unfolds. Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer's Apprentice tells Goethe's ballad without words, but with even greater visual power: every movement and escalation is immediately perceptible in the orchestra. From the same poetically dark world comes the prelude to the third act of Dukas' opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue, a shimmering glimpse into a mysterious fairy-tale landscape. Igor Strawinsky's early fireworks set a sparkling counterpoint: a short, highly virtuosic orchestral piece whose brilliance already hints at the later revolutionary of ballet. Alexander Mossolow shows surprisingly lyrical with his late Romantic harp concerto, interpreted by Xavier de Maistre. Finally, Maurice Ravel's second suite from Daphnis et Chloé: an ecstatic dream of antiquity, nature, and love. Xavier de Maistre is one of the leading harpists of the present day and excites as a soloist, chamber musician, and innovator, expanding the harp repertoire with commissions, transcriptions, and own programs. After chief positions in Quebec and international engagements in Oslo, Paris, and Lucerne, Fabien Gabel has been conducting the Tonkünstler Orchestra Niederösterreich since 2025/2026. He is known for his profound interpretations, stylistic versatility, and detailed work on sound and expression.
