What's it about?
What does great cinema sound like when it leaves the movie theater and takes over the concert hall? This evening ranges from imperial European classical music to symphonic film scores. Erich Wolfgang Korngold did not serve Hollywood but shaped it! With his opulent scores, he invented a new sound language for the cinema, carried by the musical handwriting he brought from Vienna. The suite from The Sea Hawk showcases this music in full orchestral splendor: dramatic, brilliant, highly concentrated. Fabien Gabel pairs it with Franz Schreker's shimmering prelude to a drama, a sensual condensation from the spirit of Vienna's fin de siècle, between intoxication and abyss. The evening begins with Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto, the so-called 'Emperor' Concerto: a work of majestic gesture and inner freedom. One of the great pianists of our time, Javier Perianes, returns for this performance, whose playing combines clarity, nobility, and energy. He is also a sought-after chamber musician, performs at international festivals, and has been awarded for his sensitive, precise interpretation of both classical and romantic repertoire. Since summer 2025, Fabien Gabel has been the chief conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra. The French conductor has worked with orchestras worldwide and is known for his energetic style and versatile programming.
