Souad Massi

What's it about?

She is mentioned in the same breath as folk icons like Joan Baez or Tracy Chapman: Souad Massi sings about peace, freedom, and justice, and thus sends a message of hope in her homeland Algeria. Souad Massi grew up in Algiers and was exposed to a variety of musical styles there: blues, folk, rock, Arab-Andalusian music, and Raï, the Algerian pop music. She was also the lead singer of the famous Algerian heavy metal band Atakor. All these influences shaped her and helped her develop into a singer-songwriter. In her songs, which she sings in Arabic, French, and the Berber language Kabyle, Massi opposes political oppression and social injustice. Her poetic lyrics, her melancholic alto, folk, and rock combine on her new album Zagate into a unique music that is both powerful and fragile. Due to the threatening political situation in Algeria, Souad Massi emigrated to France almost three decades ago. After her performance at the Femmes d’Algérie festival in 1999 in Paris, she was promptly signed by the label Island-Mercury, part of Universal Music, where her first album Raoui ('The Storyteller') was released. Numerous other albums and awards followed, documenting her strong voice.
