Faust Gretchen Margarete
What's it about?
"My peace is gone" – one of the phrases that remains when recalling the treasury of quotes from Goethe's Faust. A remark by Margarete, called Gretchen, which reflects her dilemma between desire and shame. The well-to-do Dr. Heinrich Faust, rejuvenated through his pact with Mephisto, is driven to world-changing adventures and is also attracted by the "Eternal Feminine." And Gretchen? In the end, it is not only Faust who brings her down, but above all the societal circumstances that determine how a woman is allowed to live. While Gretchen has to face the court proceedings, Faust has long since forgotten her. Gretchen's story is told as an intense monologue, supported by the city ensemble of the Landestheater Niederösterreich, whose members speak from their perspective as people of a land where nearly every third woman experiences sexual violence at some point in her life. Bert Zander's new adaptation of the theatrical classic shows how Margarete frees herself from the victim role assigned to her for centuries.
