What's it about?

A journey to the symphony and an evening between Vienna and Hungary: The Tonkünstler Orchestra combines Schubert's symphonic vision with Hungarian musical tradition. Franz Schubert sought, as he wrote in 1824, his "way to the great symphony" through several instrumental works. With the Great C Major Symphony D 944, which was premiered only in 1839, eleven years after his death, it became clear how far this path had taken him. Andreas Ottensamer draws a special arc on this evening: from the conductor's podium to his Hungarian roots. Zoltán Kodály's Dances from Galánta open the program with rhythmic verve, followed by Béla Bartók's early first Violin Concerto. Schubert's Great C Major Symphony concludes an evening that connects origin, passion, and symphonic grandeur. Barnabás Kelemen is one of the leading and most versatile violinists of his generation and is active worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. He has received numerous awards, including the Gramophone Classical Music Award and the Kossuth Prize. As a member of a Viennese musician family, Andreas Ottensamer is now established internationally as a clarinetist, chamber musician, and conductor, and was many years solo clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonic.
