Blood donation at F-Haus Patzmannsdorf
What's it about?
The bloodstream is the largest transport system in our body: Blood carries nutrients and oxygen to the body's cells, which convert both into energy. At the same time, it is the cells' waste disposal system, transporting waste products either to the lungs, where they are exhaled as carbon dioxide (CO2), or to the kidneys, where they are excreted with urine. Blood also contains hormones that regulate growth and development, among other things. Last but not least, the bloodstream regulates body temperature by carrying heat from the body's core outwards to the arms and legs. With these diverse tasks, it is clear: Blood is vital!Each and every one of us can unexpectedly find ourselves in a situation where we depend on life-saving blood – be it due to accidents, operations, births, or as part of treatment for serious illnesses. More precisely, a blood preserve is needed every 90 seconds in Austria. In an emergency, blood is one of the most important medications and, despite advances in medicine and technology, cannot be replaced by anything to this day. Unfortunately, only a few are willing to help, even though blood donation is so quick (the life-saving blood donation is completed in about 10 minutes) and easy. To be able to continuously supply patients in hospitals with safe blood preserves, we depend on numerous voluntary blood donors. Procurement is a complex matter, as blood preserves are only storable for a maximum of 42 days, and accepting donations "in stock" is not an option.
