The famous male choir Bolschoi Don Kosaken is the only one consisting exclusively of opera soloists. After Serge Jaroff's illness, Prof. Petja Houdjakov took over some members of the Don Kosaken Choir (Wanja Hlipka, Sadko Krastev, Bogumil Manov, Michael Minsky, among others) in the 1979/80 season and built a new choir. To distinguish the ensemble from some small, often amateurish groups, it was named Bolschoi (=great). This refers not only to the size of the choir of up to 60 artists, but also to the voices, the dancers, and the musicians, which are all "Bolschoi".
