What's it about?

Honest. Queer. Self-determined. It is the search for a perspective and life direction that has driven the queer German-Iranian Mina Richman to music from an early age. Born in Berlin but raised in the small town of Bad Salzuflen, she moves between worlds and discovers treasures like Joan As Policewoman and Nina Simone in her aunt's CD collection. Inspired by these and emerging from the loneliness of the Corona pandemic, she released her debut EP "Jaywalker" in 2022, which earned her a nomination for the PopNRW Prize as Best Newcomer. Raised "by mistake" by her father to be a feminist — as she once described in an interview with "Zeit" — she chose her artist name from Cher's famous quote "Mom, I am a rich man." The solidarity song "Baba Said" went viral during the revolution in Iran and allowed her to contribute to the fight for freedom and human rights through her music. She sees activism through music as a duty and necessity. Her debut album, released on March 15, 2024, via the Ladies&Ladys label, addresses her coming of age. With honesty, she revisits her childhood and processes conflicts with her parents, cultural dislocation, and her societal and personal relationship with her body. Together with her band, Friedrich Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Alexander Mau, Leon Brames, and producer Tobias Siebert (Juli, Enno Bunger), she developed a versatile sound inspired by soul and blues classics as well as modern folk and hip-hop productions. Named Album of the Week by DLF Kultur and FluxFM, she embarked on a nationwide headliner tour in March/April 2024, performing at events such as Orange Blossom Special, Traumzeit, Fusion, Waves Vienna, and Reeperbahn Festival. In October, she supported Christina Stürmer on tour and won the PopNRW Prize in the category "Outstanding Artist." On March 28, her second EP "Past 25" was released, and in April and May 2025, Mina Richman undertook another nationwide headliner tour and performed with Bela B in Berlin at a demo against the far right, covering the Ärzte hit "Schrei nach Liebe." Currently, she is working with her band on her second album, scheduled for release in August 2026. "Artful songs and lyrics that, through their oversharing, produce nothing but touching authenticity. GROWN UP by the German-Iranian Mina Richman is the most remarkable debut album of the year." (Linus Volkmann, Musikexpress)
