What's it about?

Even 100 years after its publication, this novella by Arthur Schnitzler has not lost its power of expression and explosiveness: the young Else T. is asked by her parents during her summer holiday to ask an older art dealer for urgently needed money. However, he wants to exploit his power over the young woman unscrupulously... Director Leonie Böhm presents Schnitzler's story as a solo performance for actress Julia Riedler in her first Vienna production – and continues to think of Else's stream of consciousness together in the here and now. "But I was never so sensible." The young Else T., a daughter from a good family, is spending her summer vacation in an elegant spa town in Trentino. She passes the time with tennis, mountain hikes, and fine dinners – until an express letter from Vienna changes everything. Her mother writes; pleading. Else is to, no, must, save her father's failing finances. After he again gambled away at the stock exchange, he needs 30,000 guilders quickly, or he risks losing social respect – or even going to prison. Else is now to ask a wealthy family friend for the money: the art dealer Dorsday. He, significantly older than Else, is vacationing in the same spa hotel and always compliments her. She finds him disgusting, but what can she do? The family's good reputation must be preserved. Dorsday, however, recognizes the hopelessness of Else's situation – and uses it for a dark game: he will transfer the debt amount only if he is allowed to look at Else naked for a quarter of an hour... First published in 1924, Arthur Schnitzler's novella FRÄULEIN ELSE remains a gripping and complex analysis of abuse of power, double standards, and the commodification of the female body even a century later – written consistently as a stream of consciousness from Else's inner perspective. For many years, actress Julia Riedler and director Leonie Böhm have had the idea of bringing this legendary stream of consciousness to the stage in a joint theater work – and to think it further for the here and now. Because that is central to Leonie Böhm's work: the canonical texts serve as an occasion to re-engage with them and to write one's own needs and ideas into them. Through humor, playfulness, and depth, new and informed interpretations emerge. Now, shortly after the novella's 100th anniversary, this heartfelt project will come to the Volkstheater stage as a solo for Julia Riedler – in Leonie Böhm's first Vienna direction.
