Wenn wir doch wieder Menschen wären - Hommage, Gedenken und ein Appell
What's it about?
On the occasion of the remembrance of the Reichspogromnacht (Night of Broken Glass), the Gemeindebautheater presents a semi-staged theater evening that commemorates the tenants who were expelled from Vienna municipal apartments in 1938. It gives them voice and presence on stage. Through documents, letters, and records of those affected, their lives and individual fates are made visible. The excerpts of the stirring and touching testimonies are mostly heard for the first time. They are brought to life through theater scenes, dance, video, music, and singing, and testify to hopes, illusions, fears, hardships, despair, and individual ways of coping with hopelessness and suffering. The texts are based, among other sources, on the years of research by the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance commissioned by Wiener Wohnen. "Wenn wir doch wieder Menschen wären" raises awareness for those who experienced a time of terror and encourages engagement with the danger of right-wing extremist ideas in our political reality. Artistic team: Isabella Gregor (overall direction, staging, text collage), Susanne F. Wolf (research, text adaptation, fictional dialogues/monologues), Oliver Ostermann (composition/collages). Performers: Lea Kalisch, Katja Reichert, Verena Scheitz, Mercedes M. Vargas Iribar, Miriam M. Vargas Iribar, Markus Freistädter, Wolfram Rupperti, Georg Schubert. Music: Adrian Roman (violin), Oliver Ostermann (piano).
