Listen to gentle breezes and violent thunderstorms, bird songs and a dog's barking, the hunt and a peasant dance, all composed by Vivaldi in his The Four Seasons at St. Stephen's Cathedral. Vivaldi was a master at creating musical images that stimulate the imagination and captivate the audience. What could be more fitting than performing Vivaldi's The Four Seasons — a parable on life and death — at Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, where after the composer's death in 1741, funeral ceremonies were also held? Vivaldi arrived in Vienna in 1740 impoverished, hoping to serve the emperor. He died just ten months later and was buried in Vienna. The program is complemented by J. S. Bach's Violin Concerto in E major, which was inspired by Vivaldi's concertos. It features both echoes of Vivaldi and Bach's unmistakable musical spirit with virtuosic solos. In the dialogue between the strings and the soloist, an entertaining and lively concert experience unfolds, beautifully rounding off Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Performers: Harmonia Ensemble Vienna
