"Is this really love?" What bad luck: Monsieur Pontagnac pursues an unknown beauty to her house, only to discover there that she is none other than the wife of his friend Vatelin. But it all gets much, much worse: his own wife is hot on his heels and she quickly agrees with Mme. Vatelin: should there be proof of the fickle husbands' infidelity, then female revenge will follow immediately. The beneficiary Redillon is already looking forward to being the laughing third party... Georges Feydeau's brilliant comedy shows what happens when infidelity, adultery, and unbridled passion collide with the hypocritical etiquette of Parisian salons - and then everyone simultaneously loses their nerve. With great linguistic wit, absurd situational comedy, and dizzying speed, Feydeau leads his characters through a chaos of lies, passions, and in search of the reality of love. The translation and adaptation of the French classic, played in our anniversary season this year, comes from H.C.
