What's it about?

WOLFGANG AMBROS & the No. 1 vom Wienerwald "Best Of" The definition "Best Of" speaks for itself, as Wolfgang Ambros' current live program naturally features classics from his 50-year stage career. The artist does not reveal the titles that will be played, which of course (quote:) "remain a surprise. It will be an atmospheric program. We recently made a significant change to the program. Of course, we can't play all the hits, but it will definitely be worth attending the concert." The astonishing career of Wolfgang Ambros - if we consider the release of "Da Hofa" in 1971 as its beginning, we are talking about 55 years! - lends itself perfectly to lists and number games, but they alone do not truly do justice to the matter, the admittedly impressive sales figures, the impressive discography in quality and quantity, the countless live performances and tours, the almost endless kilometers "on the road" in Germany, Austria, Switzerland ... The matter in question is the music itself. The (many) songs and the joy of playing them, of sharing them with an audience, these songs and this music. In an often cynical media world like ours, this may no longer necessarily be granted to an "old hand," a household name like Wolfgang Ambros, but why else would he and his band, the No. 1 vom Wienerwald, endure the stress and work that are inevitably associated with such a tour? And speaking of the No. 1 vom Wienerwald! A phenomenon in itself, this band that has accompanied Wolfgang Ambros for so many years. Günther Dzikowski on keyboards, Dietmar Baumgartner on guitar, Erich Buchebner on bass, and Harry Stampfer on drums (not to forget the background singers Ursula Gerstbach and Gitti Recher) not only (almost) always find the right notes, but the tone, the sound for Wolfgang Ambros' voice, for his songs and the stories he tells with them. Such a rich and lasting musical symbiosis that many have long automatically associated these two terms - namely Ambros and the No. 1 vom Wienerwald. What remains is the material, the program itself. Let's just briefly consider that Wolfgang Ambros could actually play hundreds of songs thanks to the discography mentioned at the beginning. Lost treasures, album tracks that may have been somewhat overshadowed by the big hits, secret older live favorites that have slipped out of the program for one reason or another ... Let's also allow the playful instinct to come into its own, because the idea of playing just this one song in such an arrangement, with a timbre that re-stages the familiar text and makes it appear completely different, has always been very tempting. There are also a few brand new songs ... If we combine all of this, then we can really look forward to great evenings. Not least because Wolfgang Ambros knows his audience so well that, despite all the new things, there will be plenty of moments that have long entered the pop-musical subconscious of this country, the vital crowd-pleasers with which the singer still and always speaks from our souls.
