Visible Storage of the Museums of the City of Linz

What's it about?

Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 18:00, viewable from the outside via the "Behrens-Band", except on public holidays. It can also be visited from the inside with guided tours. The visible storage offers a look behind the scenes of museum work. With around 550 exhibits, the depot, located along the "Behrens-Band" in the Tabakfabrik Linz, provides an exemplary insight into the collections of the Museums of the City of Linz. Exhibits from art, crafts, everyday life, handicraft, and industry are presented kaleidoscopically on 360 m² in the architecturally significant Behrens building, where cigarettes were produced until 2009. The multitude of objects creates a fascinating attic effect, which primarily reflects the serial character of the Nordico Stadtmuseum's cultural and urban history collection, comprising around 120,000 objects. Objects and artworks related to the Tabakfabrik form a bracket here. The industrial and contemporary history of the Tabakfabrik is particularly relevant for the city. In line with the general development of Linz, the cigarette factory evolved from a central industrial site into a workplace for art, culture, creative industries, and digitalization. A depot is a memory store, imbued with the myth of the hidden and promising the discovery of treasures. However, it is also a workplace that is constantly expanded and from which objects are in turn taken for exhibitions. The depot is thus not only an "altar of the past": its opening has the potential to engage with current developments.
