What's it about?

The exhibition curated by Alexandra Grimmer at the Skulpturendepot is dedicated to the sculptural work of the artist Robert Tauber, born in 1936 in St. Leonhard bei Freistadt, Upper Austria. It features 29 sculptures and a relief from the years 1962 to 1983 – a focused insight into an extensive body of work that includes around 200 pieces. Robert Tauber, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Josef Pillhofer, developed an independent visual language early on. The starting point of his work is the figure, which he never considers in isolation but always in relation to the surrounding space. His sculptures are not static bodies but define themselves through dialogue with their environment. Characteristic of Tauber's work is the immediate work on the material. Without preparatory drawings, his sculptures are created directly from wood or stone. Wood, in particular, becomes the central material, whose surface he treats through staining, polishing, gilding, or other techniques.
