What's it about?

"schmaler Grat" is the contribution of the Kunstverein Kärnten to the IVKärnten 2026 Triennale. The connection between the Triennale theme "schwach.šibko.debole" and schmaler Grat lies in the idea of vulnerability: those who balance on a narrow ledge are susceptible to disturbances – they are "weak" in the face of external influences. But this very state reveals a special quality of being. We are rooted in the here and now – and at the same time floating. Art can serve as an in-between space here, reaching out with the senses into another reality. Like a faint shimmer that passes through the membrane that seems to separate the worlds. This border experience is also omnipresent in artistic creation itself: in the intuitive decision whether a work is already complete or better discarded in acknowledgment of its imperfection.
