What's it about?
Moving away from the TV screen, back onto the stage: Tobias Poetzelsberger is back – and more personal than ever. On "A little closer," Poetzelsberger comes significantly closer, namely: to himself. After three albums with fine, but often also quiet singer-songwriter gems, the Oberösterreicher (Upper Austrian) wanted to find out what else is inside him, whether there is more to discover. And in this self-reflection, he found it. Therefore, we hear entirely new facets of the 43-year-old: there is a nostalgic soul note ("Through the blue"), earthy rock ("Queen of the Night"), but also modern folk ("Lost in Translation"). And why not once in life write a power ballad with a big string arrangement? That works too, as in "Bad Dreams," which, in fact, is reimagined in a charming trio version at the end of the album. Or: uptempo country drive as in "Let Me Be Easy." Classic singer-songwriter pop is also not missing, see "On the Internet." And Poetzelsberger channels his inner Sufjan Stevens in "Worn & Weathered." Plenty to hear in these eleven songs, which were written quite quickly compared to previous albums. "I wanted to experiment and forced myself to write differently and to explore new, untraveled paths in songwriting." Collaborations also help: there were sessions with Garish songwriter Julian Schneeberger ("Yet again," "Worn & Weathered") or the talented lyricist Dave McKendry. Oh, and speaking of lyrics: they are sometimes personal too. Poetzelsberger wrote a lot during the winter of 2025/26, when it was cold and dark, not only outside. The central theme is probably the challenges of a high-speed life that many in their 40s know. Between children, work, and music, it can become tight for the soul. And around him, there are upheavals: one gets sick, another separates, the next searches for himself. No, this is not a midlife crisis album and not diary lyrics, God forbid. But an engagement with oneself. And it is quite certainly the best album Tobias Poetzelsberger has ever written, once again brilliantly produced by Niklas Apfel and soon to be heard all over Austria with a great live band. "A little closer" is worth coming closer to.
