Venetic letters were carved into a rock ridge in pre-Roman times. The find is considered an important testimony to early trade and pilgrimage routes in the upper Gailtal. Nobel laureate Theodor Mommsen discovered the historical significance of the stone in 1857. The inscriptions were later cut out of the rock and are now in the Carinthian State Museum. The Alpine Club section Oberes Gailtal/Lesachtal has built the "Theodor Mommsen Hiking Trail" from Waldbad Mauthen to the Missoria.
