The story is musically embraced with great music from German Romanticism by Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny, wanderer motifs by Franz Schubert, as well as Viennese and Italian dance music. Original songs from the novella emphasize the events. :::Original production of the MusikSommer Bad Schallerbach::: Cast: Philipp Hochmair - Recitation Peter Gillmayr - 1st Violin Kathrin Lenzenweger - 2nd Violin Christoph Lenz - Viola Judith Bik - Cello Based on the novella "Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts" by Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1856) from 1826: "If I am a good-for-nothing, then that’s fine; I want to go out into the world and make my happiness." A miller sends his son, whom he calls a good-for-nothing because he leaves all the work to him, out into the wide world. Cheerfully, the son takes his violin and leaves his village without a clear destination. Driven by wanderlust, he travels via Vienna to Italy and then back to Germany. Along the way, he encounters peculiar companions and his great love. This is the main work of German late Romanticism, first fully published exactly 200 years ago (1826), dealing among other things with the contrast between moralizing philistines and "lazy" artists. While Goethe’s "Italian Journey" was a conscious act of observation and self-formation, Eichendorff’s work is a programmatic non-perception. In deliberate distance from the Protestant idea of a God only testified through words, Eichendorff lets the hero experience God's grace directly through nature, the course of the journey, and biographical coincidence, with temptation scenes (seduction, sensuality, Italian milieu) demonstratively ending not in sin, but in unwavering trust in God and moral integrity. Philipp Hochmair is an Austrian film, television, and theater actor. He studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and at CNSAD in Paris (1993-1996). Besides his film work, he is especially known for his stage performances at national and international theaters, where he has taken on many classical roles in a modern "postdramatic" style, including Hamlet, Mephisto (Goethe’s Faust), and Werther (after Goethe’s epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther"). Among his many roles, Hochmair gained significant attention with the monologue "Jedermann Reloaded" based on Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play "Jedermann". In this one-man show, he plays more than 20 roles, musically supported by his rock band "Die Elektrohand Gottes". He has created a genre-crossing music theater format with his solo projects ("Jedermann Reloaded", "Schiller Balladen Rave", "Der Hagestolz" among others), for which he was awarded the Cross Over Special Prize of the Austrian Music Theater Award in 2024. His spontaneous stepping in as Jedermann for the ill Tobias Moretti at the Salzburg Festival in 2018 caused a sensation. Since summer 2024, Philipp Hochmair has been very successfully performing as the new "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival under the direction of Robert Carsen. The production received international recognition and earned him a Romy award in 2025, his third Romy overall. Besides his theater career, he has been successful in film since 2001, notably in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s acclaimed film "The Experiment" and on television in "Die Manns - Ein Jahrhundertroman" by Heinrich Breloer. Further film engagements include "Winterreise" by Hans Steinbichler, "Glück gehabt" by Peter Payer, among others. His sensitive and intense portrayal of the male lead in "Kater" by Händl Klaus also garnered recognition.
