What's it about?

Public guided tour in the Angelika Kauffmann Museum From May 3rd every Tuesday at 3:30 PM and every Sunday at 10:30 AM until October 27th, 2026. Guided tour through the exhibition "Erlesen. Angelika Kauffmann and Literature". May 1st – October 31st, 2026 Erlesen. Angelika Kauffmann and Literature Summer Exhibition The exhibition explores the stories that Angelika Kauffmann (1741–1807) tells in her paintings. Which literary sources did the artist draw upon for her works? Who are the depicted figures? Which scenes and text passages did she select and how did she translate the events into images? These and other questions are examined in detail using original paintings, drawings, and prints from all periods of the painter's work. The presentation is supplemented by letters, idea sketches, and oil studies, which provide fascinating insights into the creative process – from the first images in her mind to the finished painting. The individual chapters span a range from the epics and tragedies of antiquity, through William Shakespeare and the Italian Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso, to the Age of Enlightenment, the writings of Voltaire, and famous contemporaries of the artist such as Goethe, Herder, and Klopstock. The juxtaposition of texts and images shows that Angelika Kauffmann's paintings appeal equally to the eye and the mind, and therefore not only want to be viewed, but also read. Duration 1 hour No registration is required for public guided tours. We are also happy to organize private tours for groups or school classes. Registration at the Schwarzenberg tourist office at +43 5512 3570 or museum@schwarzenberg.at
