Vorarlberg is not only the westernmost federal state but also emphasizes its independence more than any other state. JÜTZ operates in the space between — between archaic and avant-garde, between improvisation and song, between alpine tradition and contemporary sound language. This results in a unique alpine art music, created with lively joy of playing, which finds its place in mountain huts, jazz clubs, and baroque concert halls. Markus Barnay studied political science in Vienna and Berlin and dedicated his dissertation to the 'Invention of the Vorarlberger'. In his long-standing work as an ORF editor, freelance author, and exhibition curator, he has repeatedly dealt with the history of Vorarlberg and the relationship of the region to its inner- and outer-Austrian neighbors.
