Merzouga & Filippa Gojo: Peatland Paradise
What's it about?
In their 'Poems from the Moor,' Emily Brontë (1818–1848) celebrated the beauty of the Yorkshire moor. The Cologne-based sound art duo Merzouga sets these poems to contemporary songs. Together with singer Filippa Gojo, they evoke a musical in-between world. Because moors are neither water nor land. They are fluid systems of relationships, where everything is connected to everything else. Noisy improvisation and dynamic interplay meet melancholic melodies, orchestrated with an electro-acoustic composition made from moor field recordings and bioacoustic recordings of water beetles. The principle of peat formation is translated into music: layers of composed chord layers and clusters from voice, prepared electric bass, and electronics, field recordings, and poetry combine into a large sound.
