It reaches the most remote corners. A quiet mountain valley. A single life. In the large Walsertal, Delphina Burtscher grows up, born in 1926 on a farm near Sonntag. And the war, with its merciless, deadly uncompromising nature, creeps into this rural world, demanding here also the non-negotiable: obedience. Silence. Subjugation. Delphina refuses. When several men from her close circle – including two of her brothers and her fiancé – desert from the Wehrmacht, she helps them, bringing food, clothing, and messages into the forests that offer them hiding places and shelter. The act of love is also an act of resistance, in a time when desertion is punishable by death and aiding is considered a crime. Two of the men are betrayed and executed. Delphina is arrested shortly after the birth of her daughter and interned. Our piece is dedicated to this extraordinary biography, telling the story of a young woman who stood in the shadow of the great resistance narratives for decades and whose fate only late came into public consciousness. She did not succumb to the cruel logic of the regime despite hopeless circumstances, but followed only her conscience. For us, Delphina Burtscher's story is of particular urgency. She comes from this region, from the landscape that is so familiar to us. Not a chronicle of distant events, not an abstract lesson – but history rooted here, showing how closely personal decisions and great history can be intertwined.
