Schallwende - Festival for New Music 2026: FRÖDISCH

Sunday 20 September · 10:30Theater am Saumarkt · vorarlberg

What's it about?

SCHALLWENDE - a festival conceived from music itself. Like society itself, music also changes. While 19th-century composers worked within clear tonal systems - major and minor, tonality, voice leading, and metric order - today's composers seek new forms of expression. They restructure musical material, explore the world of noises, timbres, electronic and digital sound processing - and at the same time raise questions about meaning, significance, and personal commitment in a changing sound world. From this attitude, SCHALLWENDE was born - a festival for New Music, curated by composers themselves. Those who are at the center of artistic engagement take responsibility here for the aesthetic discourse, which they actively shape. This principle is no coincidence, but the heart of the festival: music thinks itself forward. The curators also contribute their own works - not out of self-reference, but as a starting point for a dialogue. Each piece relates to other positions, to colleagues, to new forms of listening. Thus, SCHALLWENDE does not become a showcase, but a laboratory where music reflects on its time from within itself. A central concern remains music education: making new music familiar to children and young people and supporting composers and ensembles active in this field is the stated goal of ARGE-Schallwende. Entirely in the tradition of the city of Feldkirch - shaped by personalities such as Dr. Helmut Futscher and Walfried Kraher - it continues the continuous engagement with contemporary music creation. The Theater am Saumarkt offers itself as an ideal venue for the Schallwende portrait concerts - a space for encounter, research, and lively sound experiments. SCHALLWENDE shows how composers think, research, and network today - and how, through their own curatorial actions, they create new connections between sound, idea, and audience. A festival that reinvents itself every year - conceived from music itself. "If there is music that is called 'new', it is only because it continues the old. What we do is not the opposite of tradition, but its continuation in another way." (Arnold Schoenberg from a lecture on musical progress) ARGE-Schallwende - Anna Maly, Dietmar Kirchner, Wolfgang W. Lindner Program: upstream ≈ frutz ≈ ill ≈ frödisch "Upstream" is movement against the direction of the usual. Listening against the current. Tangible resistance. Obstacles are overcome. Curiosity arises…. The rivers Frutz, Ill, and Frödisch characterize the Vorarlberg region - scenically, historically, and culturally. As a leitmotif, they stand for regionality and earthiness, authenticity, but also for dynamism, branching, confluence, connection, and power supply. Like watercourses with their own character, meeting, flowing into each other, influencing each other, different sound languages, aesthetic positions, and compositional signatures relate to each other in this concert series. Contemporary music - predominantly from Vorarlberg - appears here not as a closed style, but as a living network: fragmentary and concentrated, resistant, permeable, experimental, and sensual. "Upstream" also refers to the source: to the essential, the reduced, the not yet solidified. Listeners are invited to embrace uncertainties, to hear the familiar anew, and to make space for the unexpected.
