Jassen at the Museum

What's it about?

Once a month during the museum's opening hours in the afternoon, with voluntary donations for admission - catering is provided. Initially regulated with suspicion by authorities, the card game developed into Vorarlberg's national pastime. Jassen is considered almost a folk sport in Vorarlberg, but little is actually known about its history. It is clear only that Jassen was very useful and perhaps still is, for playfully learning certain social and cultural practices: counting, adding, arguing, making peace. It helped people learn about others and themselves. However, it is also unmistakable that Jassen has significantly declined in importance among the younger generation. It is still too early to mourn the extinction of Jassen, but like many older games, it faces threatening competition from new media. At the Silbertal Mining Museum, Jassen has been successfully maintained for years, and the rounds are very popular. However, no money is played for.
