Jassen at the Museum

Jassen at the Museum

Thursday 24 SeptemberMontafoner Bergbaumuseum · vorarlberg

What's it about?

Once a month during the museum's afternoon opening hours, admission by voluntary donation - refreshments are provided.Initially viewed with suspicion and regulated by the authorities, card games developed into Vorarlberg's national pastime. Jassen is practically considered a popular sport in Vorarlberg, but little is actually known about its history. It is clear, however, that Jassen was, and perhaps still is, very useful for playfully learning certain social and cultural practices: counting, adding, arguing with each other, reconciling. One learned to assess others and oneself. It is also undeniable, however, that Jassen has significantly lost importance among the younger generation. It is still too early to lament the extinction of Jassen, but it faces - like many older games - threatening competition from new media. At the Bergbaumuseum Silbertal, Jassen has been successfully cultivated for years, and the rounds enjoy great popularity. However, no money is played for.Card game
