6th Conference of the Working Group for House Research
What's it about?
The Working Group for House Research – Regional Group Austria warmly invites submissions for the 6th Conference on October 24 and 25, 2026, in Schruns (Vorarlberg). The conference is titled "Nailed and Pegged – Building-Related Equipment and Usage Traces in Historic Construction" and is held in cooperation with the Montafoner Museums. This year's conference focuses on the broad topic of "building-related equipment and usage traces" as well as the research, documentation, and evaluation of these often overlooked but essential components of construction and usage history. Building-related equipment are among the constitutive elements of historic buildings. They allow conclusions to be drawn about historical space usage, their functional and qualitative requirements, and their changes over time. Windows and doors, stairs, built-in furniture, building technology, wooden wall coverings, floors, stucco, and wall paintings not only shape the appearance of a building but are also central testimonies of past usage and design concepts. Usage traces, on the other hand, are not necessarily linked to building-related equipment and can provide information about practices in and around the buildings that cannot be captured by other findings. These traces can also be diametrically opposed to building-related equipment if, for example, they are no longer used in accordance with their primary intention but are not removed. Contributions are sought that address the historical equipment and their usage traces from different perspectives – from architectural and art history to restoration and monument preservation, as well as archaeological or scientific investigation methods. Both overview presentations and contributions on individual objects or specific topics (equipment elements, practices in/on buildings, and traceability) with reference to Austria and neighboring regions and countries are welcome.
