Stefan Vladar is one of the most prominent Austrian musicians of his generation. Winning the International Beethoven Piano Competition early in his career opened the way for him to perform on the world's leading concert stages. Since then, his piano career and collaborations with artists such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Yehudi Menuhin, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Simon Rattle have taken him to leading orchestras and international festivals. At the same time, Vladar has established a reputation as a conductor; since the 2019/20 season, he has been General Music Director and Opera Director at the Theater Lübeck. For this recital, Stefan Vladar dedicates himself to three key works spanning from Viennese Classicism to late Romanticism. Joseph Haydn's Andante con variazioni in F minor unfolds from a simple, compelling theme into a concentrated and multi-layered sequence of transformations. Beethoven's "Appassionata" takes this inner intensity into the dramatic: the sonata is characterized by relentless energy, formal daring, and great existential tension. Finally, Franz Schubert's last piano sonata in B major, D 960, is performed, one of the broadest and most profound works of the piano repertoire. Between transcendent calm, sudden abysses, and a singing quality almost beyond time, this sonata opens a special musical space. Stefan Vladar approaches this program as a pianist who combines interpretative clarity, tonal differentiation, and a keen sense of musical dramaturgy.
