What's it about?

Based on interviews with over seventy people born in Western Europe towards the end of World War II, the new opera We Are The Lucky Ones by composer Philip Venables and librettists Ted Huffman and Nina Segal paints a portrait of a generation that started with little, experienced growing prosperity, and is now leaving behind a world that seems unable to sustain further growth. In 100 minutes, music and language, experiences, dreams, and memories intertwine in 60 scenes with reflections on the relationship between the private and the political, the impact of personal choices, and what truly matters in the face of pessimistic forecasts about the future of our world. The opera premiered with great success at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam on March 14, 2025, and is now having its Austrian premiere in Erl.
