What's it about?

By Felicia Zeller REPRISE HOME is where the heart is. Home is not a place, it is a feeling. […] HOME is also the most dangerous place in the world for women, trans people, non-binary people, (gender-)queer people, and children. Is the danger of experiencing violence as great at HOME (Laura Leupi) Every third woman* between 18 and 74 years old in Austria has experienced physical and/or sexual violence from the age of 15. Almost one in six women* has been threatened with physical violence as an adult. Physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by partners, so-called domestic violence, affects over 16% of women between 18 and 74 years old. This is shown by a survey on violence against women conducted by Statistik Austria between 2020 and 2021 on behalf of Eurostat and the Federal Chancellery. The topic of violence against women, which should actually be called male violence, is repeatedly trivialized or dismissed as a marginal phenomenon. It is denied that it is a deeply rooted, structurally embedded societal problem. In her piece "Antrag auf größtmögliche Entfernung von Gewalt" (Application for the Maximum Distance from Violence), Felicia Zeller weaves, based on real interviews, highly artificial biographies of women who have found their way to women’s shelters with voices of women’s shelter staff or doctors, hurtful voices of perpetrators, and the inattentive voices of those who overlook the problem. This has resulted in a powerful score that interweaves fragments of lives and poetically clashes between the search for happiness and real constraints. Despair quickly turns into absurd comedy, as in some partnerships, family peace turns into pointless violence. The evening does not aim to dwell in a gesture of sympathy or portray women as victims, but to give space to strong voices that are on their way to reshaping their lives.
